Summary, etc. Spanning a long period, from the 1940’s to 2012, and set in diverse locales, from colonial Calcutta to the suburbs in the 60’s, to modern Kolkata and Paris, the novel tells two stories, one within the other, the two merging finally. A love story, mystery and thriller, Face in the Mirror, will appeal to all sections of readers. The protagonist, Mrinmoyee Chatterjee, is a feisty fifty year old, an expatriate, living in Paris, on a holiday to Kolkata, during which her father expires and she has to prolong her stay. Alone at her parents’ house, she remembers her past, her youth and tumultuous love affairs culminating to an inter-religious marriage and much more beyond. The story is racy, revealing her life through flash-backs and reminiscences. Hailing from a small suburban town, and having gone to a convent Catholic school in the city, her life during childhood has been one of duality, an existence on two planes, the rural and the urban, the Indian and the western. She faces resistance from her parents, staunch Hindus, when she decides to marry a Muslim. She acquires a third identity, alienated from her family and moving to Paris with her husband. She has a fourth existence, in her dreams. Visions of a woman sad, a palatial mansion and vignettes of an old world in her dreams haunt and torment her. She begins writing a story based on her dreams. In the story that she writes, is unfolded the sad life of a young woman, Manorama, who lived and died in the 40’s, trapped in a loveless marriage with the son of a wealthy businessman. The more she writes of the life story of Manorama, the more she withdraws into a cocoon. She isolates herself from the world. Her friends finally suggest that she visit a psychoanalyst and though refusing initially, she agrees. With the issues finally resolved, Mrinmoyee regains her sense of calm and feels free of the desperation that had possessed her all her life. Her story in the meantime has interested the media.
