Villages came before towns, and even in the most industrialized countries, where all economic questions tend to be studied from an urban point of view, it is well to be reminded that the economic life of a town or city cannot be understood without reference to the lands which send it its food and raw materials, and the villages from which it attracts young men and women. On taking up his appointment as Professor of Indian Economics in the University of Madras in December 1915, the author was determined to direct the attention of students towards the study of particular villages. He asked students of the University who were willing to help to make surveys of their native villages during the long vacation: Includes bibliographical references and index.
