This remarkable 1844 publication by the Prussian schoolteacher Hermann Grassmann (1809–77) was largely misunderstood by the mathematicians of his time and went unrecognized for many years. However, it foreshadowed 20th-century advances such as vector spaces, dimension theory, and exterior products, and is now considered a foundational work in mathematics.
