Metaphysical realism and essentialism about kinds The naturalness of kinds Kinds in the special sciences Kinds in the biological and social sciences Kinds of natural kinds Kinds naturalized
Drawing on a thorough examination of classification in both the natural and social sciences, this book challenges essentialism and advocates for a naturalist perspective on natural kinds. Through case studies from a range of scientific fields, including fluid mechanics, virology, polymer science, and psychiatry, the author argues that natural kinds are nodes within causal networks. Based on this perspective, he asserts that natural kinds can exist not only in the natural sciences but also in the social sciences.
